Advancing Local Heart Care

TAVR

TAVR

TAVR is a proven, minimally-invasive surgical option for patients who’ve been diagnosed with severe aortic stenosis to replace their diseased aortic heart valve.  Unlike traditional open chest surgeries to replace a heart valve, TAVR requires only a three to four inch incision in the leg or chest wall. This procedure enables the placement of a balloon-expandable heart valve into the body with a tube-based delivery system (catheter).

Most patients will leave the hospital within a few days and can resume all normal activities shortly after.

TAVR is suitable for patients with severe aortic stenosis. It is particularly effective for patients who are considered either high-risk or too sick for open heart surgery. As a minimally invasive procedure, TAVR has a few distinct advantages over traditional, open heart valve surgery, including:

TAVR is a good option for patients who are not eligible for traditional, open heart surgery for any reason. TAVR offers patients with higher risks an option to restore their quality of life that they did not have before.

  • Less time in the hospital. Most patients will leave the hospital within a few days and can resume all normal activities shortly after.
  • Shorter recovery times. Patients generally experience a quicker return to full activity with much less postoperative discomfort.

The first TAVR procedure was done at St. Agnes Hospital on July 8, 2019.

WATCHMAN

Watchman

The Dale Michels Center for Heart Care at Agnesian HealthCare is now offering one of the latest procedures to help patients with atrial fibrillation (AFib) management. The FDA-approved WATCHMAN procedure is designed to help a specific group of AFib patients who are poor long-term candidates for oral anticoagulation by implanting a stent-like device into the left atrial appendage via a catheter-based approach. The WATCHMAN procedure reduced the risk of stroke and can offer the benefit of eliminating anticoagulation medications. The first WATCHMAN procedure was done at St. Agnes Hospital on June 3, 2019

Ask your cardiologist if you are a candidate for WATCHMAN.
