What does a licensed athletic trainer do?

Agnesian Sports & Spine Center, licensed athletic trainers

In my nine years’ experience as a licensed athletic trainer (LAT), I have often been asked the question, “What does an athletic trainer do?” or “That’s like a personal trainer, right?” Well, not exactly.

Although LATs can specialize in performance enhancement, that simply scratches the surface of what we are able to provide. We provide individuals with expert care in preventive services, emergency care, clinical diagnosis, therapeutic intervention and rehabilitation of injuries. Because of what we are able to provide, this allows for quicker recovery and a more efficient care plan for those athletes and non-athletes that we see. We are available between two and five days per week during after school hours in the athletic training room to work with those student athletes and non-athletes that may require follow up care for an existing injury or evaluation of a new injury. We are also present at most athletic events to ensure student athletes are safe and have the appropriate medical care should an injury take place. Having an LAT available is a huge advantage because they are able to facilitate treatment and monitor recovery to ensure that athletes are only returning to play when it is safe to do so.

Some of the common injuries that athletic trainers evaluate throughout the school year are:

  • Ankle sprains
  • ACL (Anterior Cruciate Ligament)
  • Meniscus tears
  • Muscle contusions
  • Fractures
  • Concussions
Every athlete that we work with receives the most advanced medical care possible. LATs are an integral part of the sports medicine care team at Agnesian HealthCare and work collaboratively with other healthcare providers to return athletes to the field of play safely and quickly.  Agnesian HealthCare currently employs 13 LATs who provide services to our 14 contracted schools through our Athletic Training Outreach Program listed below:

  • Winnebago Lutheran Academy
  • St. Mary’s Springs Academy
