January 16, 2019 will be a busy day at the Christian Home & Rehabilitation Center as employees and volunteers prepare to move residents into their new home at 452 Fox Lake Road in Waupun.

The move culminates several years of intensive planning for the new, roughly 104,784-square-foot facility. The $22.4 million project features skilled nursing, assisted living and memory care services.

A grand opening celebration is scheduled from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Sunday, January 13. Overflow parking will be available with shuttle services at the Central Wisconsin Christian School, Waupun.

“We are so very proud to bring this new facility to the Waupun community,” according to Doug Trost, vice president, Long-Term Care for SSM Health at Home. “The community has been so incredibly supportive of the Christian Home, and we are excited with the new opportunities this facility will offer to older adults and their families.”

The new facility will feature:

Skilled nursing

  • 50 private rooms with individual bathrooms/showers
  • Long-term and short-stay rehabilitation wings
  • 2,436-square-foot rehabilitation gym

Assisted living

  • Two studio apartments
  • 26 single bedroom apartments
  • Two, two-bedroom apartments
  • Library/media center
  • Fitness center
  • Common areas for socializing

Memory care

  • 18 additional beds (adjacent to existing 18-bed memory care facility); scheduled to open spring 2019

It is more than long-term care - it will be a destination of choice featuring a two-story atrium lobby, chapel, kitchen, gift shop and bistro.

“Our new facility is built with all the comforts of home and more to meet the needs of our residents and their families,” according to Barb Wirkus, executive director. “It is elegant and beautiful with cathedral ceilings that allow natural light. Residents and families will have multiple areas where they can enjoy conversations and quiet moments, like our bistro.”

The home’s chapel, thanks to capital campaign contribution seed funding, is a non-denominational space for quiet meditation, celebration and reflection. A hearing loop is installed to prevent hearing aid feedback, while Mass and religious services can be broadcast into residents’ rooms.

Outdoor patio areas are available for nice weather days, and beauty shop with two stations to support good conversation and a little fussing. In addition, the Margaret Blekkink Family Suite is available for family use during hospice care or for a special diagnosis, allowing the utmost of privacy and reflection.

“Our short-term rehabilitation area offers access to physical, occupational and speech therapy, along with outpatient therapy options,” according to Wirkus. “A private entry into our 2,436-square-foot rehabilitation gym and spa make this an added convenience for those individuals following surgery, illness or injury.”

The Christian Home & Rehabilitation Center was founded more than 70 years ago by Waupun area churches. After many years filled with many changes, a decision to build a replacement facility started as a dream. Following a capital campaign and the purchase of 10 acres of land in December 2016, the planning continued introducing a new Christian Home facility within the city of Waupun.

Hoffman Planning, Design & Construction, Inc. is serving as the architect for the project; with CD Smith Construction as general contractor.
