Treating Cancer with Chemotherapy (Medical Oncology)

While some cancers can be treated with surgery, chemotherapy (medical oncology/hematology) or radiation therapy/oncology may be needed. If this is the case, Agnesian Cancer Care staff provides compassionate, state-of-art cancer care close to home. No need to travel an hour for testing, treatment or other services – all your care will be close to home.

Chemotherapy is the general term for any treatment involving the use of chemicals to stop cancer cells from growing. Chemotherapy can eliminate cancer cells at sites great distances from the original cancer. These treatments may include targeted therapy to directly attack the cancer cells and medicines to boost the body’s immune system to fight the cancer. For millions of people, chemotherapy helps treat their cancer effectively, enabling them to enjoy full, productive lives.

Ranked One of the Best In the Country

The Agnesian Cancer Center was named one of the top cancer programs in the country by the Commission on Cancer of the American College of Surgeons. The rating was given after a rigorous evaluation process and on-site review by the Commission on Cancer.

Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy

This team uses the latest radiation therapy technology, cancer data sources, and clinical trials to offer the most comprehensive care possible.

Agnesian Cancer Care offers the latest radiation therapy technology including 3D treatment planning computers, simulators, linear accelerators, 3D tissue compensators and radiation implants. One of the greatest recent advancements in radiation therapy is available at CWCP. Called Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT), this state-of-the-art treatment delivers high doses of pinpointed radiation to tumors while substantially reducing the risk to surrounding normal tissue.  IMRT uses special technology to sculpt the radiation beams and conform them to the exact size, shape and dimension of the tumor. It is most effective on defined tumors in difficult to reach areas or those adjacent to vital organs. Patients benefit greatly from this therapy because it:

  • Minimizes radiation to surrounding tissue.
  • Offers fewer short-term and long-term side effects.
  • Improves the quality of life for patients, who often are able to resume their normal activities shortly after each treatment.

As the only provider locally to offer IMRT, and one of only a handful in the state, Agnesian Cancer Care is proud to be a leader in this newer technology. The 3D tissue compensator, used in radiation therapy, helps physicians and staff target radiation doses to the pinpoint accuracy as a surgeon can with a surgical knife.

Cancer Data Sources

Agnesian Cancer Care participates in the Cancer Registry. The Cancer Registry is a Cancer Care department which collects cancer data on each patient who is diagnosed and/or treated at Agnesian HealthCare. Agnesian Cancer Care is accredited through the Commission on Cancer of the American College of Surgeons which is a joint program with the National Cancer Data Base (NCDB) and the American Cancer Society (ACS). The NCDB is a nationwide oncology outcomes database for commission-accredited cancer programs which collects data on all types of cancer and is tracked and analyzed. The data is then used to track cancer trends to be used for quality improvement. The Agnesian Cancer Care Cancer Registry is required to collect and submit specific data items to the NCDB.

For more information on Agnesian Cancer Care's Cancer Registry, call Patty Wettstein at (920) 926-4171 or Kay Hebel at (920) 926-4170.

Clinical Trials

In cancer research, clinical trials play an important role in the battle against the disease by evaluating new treatments and helping find ways to improve cancer care. This life-saving research is available at Agnesian Cancer Care through an affiliation with the Alliance for Clinical Trials in Oncology.

The Alliance for Clinical Trials in Oncology is a combination of three national cancer clinical research cooperative groups: The American College of Surgeons Oncology Group (ACOSOG), Cancer and Leukemia Group B (CALGB) and the North Central Cancer Treatment Group (NCCTG), which are National Cancer Institute (NCI)-funded. The Alliance for Clinical Trials in Oncology provides the CWCP high quality multidisciplinary cancer control, prevention and treatment trials that engage a comprehensive research network. Currently, Agnesian Cancer Care offers seven different clinical trials in areas such as breast, brain and lung cancer. Patients participating in these trials benefit in several ways, including by:

  • Receiving state-of-the-art treatment before it becomes standard care.
  • Being closely monitored by a research team that is part of a larger network of providers.
  • Eliminating the need to travel out of the area to take part in clinical trials.
  • Patients receive the newest treatment.

Patient safety and security is foremost in the program, with strict protocols, or action plans, followed throughout a course of care. Agnesian Cancer Care is the only provider in the area to offer cancer clinical trials. With locations in Fond du Lac, Ripon and Waupun, you do not need to travel far to get the care you need. For more information about clinical trials, call Sheree West at (920) 926-5321.
