Robotic surgery Helps Successfully Treat Prostate Cancer

Bloedorn was referred to a urologist, where he chose to see Robert Santa-Cruz, MD, a board-certified urologist with Agnesian HealthCare’s Fond du Lac Regional Clinic. A biopsy confirmed prostate cancer.

“Dr. Santa-Cruz laid out the options,” he recalls. “I could do nothing...which was scary to me.” 

Radiation therapy and surgery were presented as the best options for Bloedorn. “The good news is that Fond du Lac had just acquired the latest technology in terms of performing surgeries of this type - the da Vinci Surgical System. My wife and I did some research on-line and found that the da Vinci robotic surgery had a shorter recovery time and was far less invasive than traditional surgery. I decided that Dr. Santa-Cruz and this procedure were right for me.”

Less than a month from initial diagnosis, Bloedorn underwent the robotic surgical procedure. 

“The incisions were small, and the pain was minimal,” Bloedorn shares. “I only needed a small bandage to cover one of the incision areas and used one pain pill throughout my entire recovery.”

Pathology tests confirmed all of the cancerous prostate was successfully removed, and the surrounding tissue had no cancer. 

Dr. Santa-Cruz is using this technology for urological procedures and brings extensive experience, having successfully performed robotic surgery for 10 years. He uses the da Vinci Surgical System for the following procedures: prostatectomy, nephrectomy, partial nephrectomy, pyeloplasty, ureteral reimplant, cystectomy and sacrocolpopexy.

He is joined by other Agnesian HealthCare providers also using the da Vinci Surgical System for other procedures.
