What is infusion therapy?

Infusion therapy is the administration of medication intravenously (IV).  It is prescribed when a patient's condition is such that it cannot be treated effectively by oral medications alone.

What are infusion services?

Infusion services can be provided when you no longer require hospitalization, but your medical condition warrants continued infusion therapy.  Infusion therapy can also be utilized for the long-term management of chronic conditions.  These services can be provided at our Ambulatory Infusion Department or through the Home Infusion Department based on your individualized needs. 

Infusion therapy may be provided for patients who need:

  • Medication for chronic illnesses such as Crohn’s disease,rheumatoid arthritis, and multiple sclerosis
  • Pain management
  • IV hydration therapy
  • Blood products such as platelets, red cells or plasma
  • IV antibiotics for an infection
  • IV immune globulin to boost the body’s natural defense system against infection
  • Specialty injectable medications
     

Why was Infusion Services established?

Infusion services was created as an alternative to being in the hospital or at a skilled facility to receive your infusion therapy.

Who is eligible to use Infusion Services?

Anyone who requires infusion therapy with a referral from their health care provider.  Once your provider has referred you to infusion services, associates at the clinic will contact you to coordinate your care.

What is the difference between ambulatory and home infusion?

Both services are provided by specialty trained and qualified clinicians.

Ambulatory Infusion:  Medications are administered in a clinic setting by a nurse.  This service requires patients to come in to the clinic for a scheduled appointment.  As a patient you will receive your therapy in a dedicated infusion suite.

Home Infusion:  Infusion therapy is provided in your home.  Medications are prepared and delivered to your door step.  Patients will be thoroughly educated and trained on how to administer these medications to themselves in their home through specialized equipment.  This specialized equipment is compact and easy to use allowing patients to continue their normal daily routine.  Nursing support is available 24 hours per day.

How do I know what service is best for me?

Your clinical condition and type of therapy will determine if you qualify for home or outpatient clinic infusions.
