AHC Foundation helps support medical needs for SWAT ‘hot zone’ team members
The Agnesian HealthCare Foundation is supporting the Fond du Lac County Sheriff’s Office SWAT Team by funding 15 individual medical kits and additional medical supplies for the team’s Tactical Protector Vehicle (TPV) mass casualty kit.
“SWAT operators work in an environment referred to as the ‘hot zone,’ meaning the area is not safe and the suspect(s) may not be in custody,” says Sheriff Mick Fink. “Due to the high level of danger, EMS personnel will not enter a hot zone to provide medical care. SWAT operators must carry their own lifesaving medical supplies for emergency treatment of wounds to innocent civilians, themselves, other operators and suspects that may be injured in the hot zone.”
Thanks to the Agnesian HealthCare Foundation donation of $3,500, each SWAT operator will now have a medical kit with them, as well as additional supplies for the TPV trauma kit, to be used in the event of a mass casualty incident.
The Fond du Lac County Sheriff’s Office request is following training and certification by all members in Tactical Emergency Casualty Care. “This level of certification includes training in the application of nasopharyngeal airways, needle decompression, chest seals, tourniquets, combat gauze and other lifesaving emergency medical treatments,” according to Fink.
The Agnesian HealthCare Foundation was able to support this important project thanks to donations given to its Unrestricted Fund.
“Generous community support has helped the Agnesian HealthCare Foundation to be a valued resource as opportunities arise to enhance the overall health and well-being of individuals, families and even area organizations with similar missions,” says Rita Meidam, Agnesian HealthCare Foundation executive director. “It can be difficult to predict future healthcare needs of residents in our area communities. But, through our Unrestricted Fund, we have a greater ability to help fund new programs and services that we may not know about today, but can spring up at any given time.”
The Agnesian HealthCare Foundation is just beginning its 2014 annual appeal, which will help support the Unrestricted Fund. Individuals and businesses interested in giving can call the Foundation at (920) 926-4959.
