Agnesian HealthCare Foundation receives grant from The Farrah Fawcett Foundation
Cancer is physically, emotionally and financially draining. There are the obvious costs: medical bills, co-pays and medications. There are the less-obvious costs, such as increased gas bills caused by frequent trips to and from the doctor’s office. And then there are the financial hits: decreased income because cancer treatments interfere with work, because you’re too sick to work a full day, or because your partner takes time off of work to care for you. It’s easy to fall behind.
That’s where a $25,000 grant from The Farrah Fawcett Foundation, based out of California, to the Agnesian HealthCare Foundation will help individuals that are facing financial hardships as a result of their particular health diagnosis. Funds can help people make rent, cover utility bills, fill an LP tank and provide gas and grocery cards to families affected by cancer.
The mission of The Farrah Fawcett Foundation is to support cutting edge cancer research, help patients battling cancer who are in need of financial support, and to focus on prevention and awareness. Fawcett succumbed to anal cancer in 2009.
“Farrah not only wanted to help further research for a cure ... she also wanted to help people actually struggling with cancer in the present,” according to Alana Stewart, president of The Farrah Fawcett Foundation. In regards to patient assistance, she added, “Farrah was grateful that she was able to fund her own treatment, however, she realized that there are many less fortunate than her.”
The Foundation has established ‘The Farrah Fawcett Fund for Patient Assistance’ at different cancer centers around the country to help these patients who are desperately in need of financial aid,” Stewart adds. “The foundation is also committed to raising cancer awareness through early detection and the support of more studies in the prevention of this dreadful disease.”
The generous grant will help patients receiving care through the Agnesian Cancer Center, according to Rita Meidam, Agnesian HealthCare Foundation executive director.
“The Farrah Fawcett Fund for Patient Assistance provides a resource for qualified individuals to answer these basic needs,” says Meidam. “Being able to focus on healing, physically and mentally when you have an illness is so important. And, when you are ill, sometimes life’s needs get overlooked. The new fund is an avenue to assist in these areas of need.”
The Agnesian HealthCare Foundation also provides assistance with basic living expenses for patients with financial needs through the Carol Hyland Caring for You Fund.
