Plans ramping up for 2013 GEMS conference
October 08, 2013

The ninth annual Girls, Engineering, Math & Science (GEMS) one-day conference for girls in grades six to eight is scheduled for Saturday, November 2 at the UW-Fond du Lac Campus, 400 University Drive, Fond du Lac.

Agnesian HealthCare, Marian University, Moraine Park Technical College and UW-Fond du Lac are proud to sponsor this annual conference.

GEMS is designed to increase awareness of careers in math and science, understand how to pursue a career in math and science, develop confidence that math and science careers are achievable, raise awareness of the benefits of a healthy lifestyle, and interact with female role models in math and science fields.

The conference will start at 9 a.m. on Saturday, November 2, with an opening session, followed by two workshops, a catered luncheon and an afternoon workshop. The event ends promptly at 3 p.m.

A total of 19 workshops are available; enrollment is on a first-come, first-serve basis. Early bird registration is $25 through October 16. After October 16, registration is $35. Registration deadline is October 22. All attendees will receive a T-shirt and backpack filled with goodies. Scholarships are available.

This year’s fun and educational workshops will cover a wide range of topics and are presented by women in the field or college professors. Favorite topics are back by popular demand and new ones have been added. Some of the session titles include: Nurse in Action, Rock on Make-Up!, Crime Scene Investigation: Fingerprint Recovery and Analysis, Prescription for Fun!, Robot Invasion and more.

Parents will also have an opportunity to attend a day of programming. Three free educational presentations will be offered: Really! It’s Time to Start Thinking about College!: Navigating the Teenage Years – Addressing Behaviors, Freedoms and Consequences; and Being Prepared: What You Need to Know Now to Be Successful Later.

Scholarships are available from the UW-Fond du Lac Foundation, Moraine Park Technical College Foundation and Marian University Foundation for those qualifying for the 2013/2014 free/reduced lunch program at their schools.

Founding sponsors include: Agnesian HealthCare, Marian University, Moraine Park Technical College and UW-Fond du Lac in collaboration with the Fond du Lac Public Library, Girl Scouts of Manitou Council and UW-Extension Fond du Lac County.
