Healthy Fond du Lac County 2020 launches health and wellness web site
Navigating the maze of health and wellness topics on the Internet can be, at times, overwhelming. Just as there are many people surfing the Internet for medical information, there are also many people sharing information on the Internet. How does a consumer know what to believe is true?
In fact, 80 percent of Internet users, or about 93 million Americans, have searched for a health-related topic on-line, according the latest Pew study. That number is up 62 percent in just the last 10 years. The study also reveals that searching for health or medical information is one of the most popular activities on-line.
A key strategy by the Healthy Fond du Lac County 2020 Steering Committee is to provide a handy, easily-accessible way for county residents to access important health and wellness-related information on such important topics as weight management, dental care, mental health and alcohol abuse.
As a result, the committee has just unveiled a new educational web site as of July 1, 2013, which can be viewed by visiting www.livingwellfdl.org.
“We know that as informed healthcare consumers, knowledge is power,” says Kim Mueller, RN, Fond du Lac County Public Health officer. “We are very fortunate in Fond du Lac County to have many qualified and dedicated experts that will be providing us valuable information to share with the community. Our goal is to educate and enlighten residents so they can take action to protect and preserve their own health.”
The web site also includes a calendar of upcoming health and wellness-related events, information about Healthy Fond du Lac County 2020 initiatives, and an interactive blog that spotlights news articles of interest to the general public.
Agnesian HealthCare is providing financial support to launch the web site, while BrownBoots Interactive has helped to create and design the site.
“Helping county individuals and families have information at their fingertips is a critical part of our mission,” Mueller says. “We want to provide as many learning opportunities as we can, as easily as we can. And, there is no better way I can think of achieving this than utilizing the many resources we are fortunate to have here, right in our own communities.”
Business and community leaders throughout Fond du Lac County have been working together - as part of the Healthy Fond du Lac County 2020 initiative - recognizing that today’s health needs have become more complex and expansive than ever before.
The Healthy Fond du Lac County 2020 Steering Committee has been executing the 2012-2015 Fond du Lac County Health Improvement Plan, which establishes goals and measurable objectives to address the four most pressing health concerns in the county. They include the increasing rates of obesity; access to dental care for individuals with Medicaid; access to mental health services; and alcohol use and abuse facing Fond du Lac County.
