Mark your calendars for Saturday, April 20 and experience a special morning of cancer learning and sharing. Open to all ages, the 17th annual “Living Smart” is scheduled from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the Agnesian Cancer Center, 480 E. Division Street, and will focus on early detection, prevention and cancer education. Participants will need to register for screenings by Friday, April 12.
“This free health event offers the community a wonderful opportunity to learn more about the importance of cancer awareness and early detection, what cancer risks they may have and what steps they should take to decrease their risks of developing cancer,” says Bill Daly, director of Agnesian HealthCare oncology services.
Living Smart will also feature many free cancer screenings by area physicians and other healthcare professionals. Screenings include a breast self-exam education program, PSA (prostate blood test for men; $5), digital rectal exam (prostate exam for men), skin cancer screenings, oral cancer screenings (mouth, tongue and throat) and testicular screenings. The PSA blood test and the digital rectal exam for men are both recommended for the best prostate screening result. The PSA must be done prior to the digital rectal exam (age 70 and younger).
The morning program will also include FIT testing (a colorectal screening kit to take home; $3), health risk assessment, genetic risk assessment information, smoking cessation information, educational displays, giveaways and refreshments. Plus, individuals can also tour the robotic imaging linear accelerator, as well as enjoy a live food demonstration with samples of cancer prevention recipes.
The Agnesian Cancer Center provides diagnosis and treatment for cancer patients throughout a 10-county region, with locations in Fond du Lac, Waupun and Ripon.
Preregistration is required for all Living Smart cancer screenings by calling the Agnesian Cancer Center at (920) 926-4100. You can select all or any of the screenings, which will be offered free (except for the $5 PSA screening and the $3 FIT colorectal screening kit).
